After awing at the design of the laptop, you’ll probably be awing in pain once you pick it up. The laptop battery weighs in at a hefty 10 pounds, which is heavy by laptop standards.
The G45 surprisingly is a quiet and cool laptop, considering the HD capabilities and the performance it has under the hood. While the fan does spin up a few times, unless you’re using the laptop in a library, you won’t notice the fan sound, especially when you’re sitting back and enjoying an HD-DVD movie.
The sleek tapered design for the LCD lid is welcome, it adds a very nice touch of eco-modernism to the design. Kudos are deserved for matching the keyboard to the same color as the laptop as well - and only having 4 small stickers adorning the keypad.
All of these issues have been remedied in this the new 10-inch Mini 2140. It’s faster and costs less while retaining the same excellent build quality. Vista has been replaced by an old fashioned but snappier Windows XP GK479 3R305 battery . In terms of performance, the 2140 can be compared with other similar netbooks Dell Latitude D620 battery– it’s enough for web browsing, office work and watching videos, which is more or less what netbooks are intended for.
If only it were lighter it might actually be as smooth as it looks, but at 6.11 lbs (more with the 9-cell battery) you won’t be casually lifting up the studio with one hand to show it off (not that we recommend that anyway). With dimensions of 14”x10.3”x1”/1.3” (front/back), the Studio isn’t exactly thin either. Our version came with the extended 9-cell Business Notebook 6910p battery , which props up the back at an angle that is not uncomfortable for typing but adds about another .75” to the depth in the back. The Studio isn’t so thick that it looks bad at all, so don’t worry about those style points. It’s just clearly not competing in the thin-and-light laptop category.
The 320GB SATA hard drive and the 8X dual-layer Super Multi optical drive will give you plenty of storage space, and the standard array of ports (two USB ports on each side of the laptop and a multiformat card reader) and connectivity options (56-kbps modem, gigabit ethernet, and 802.11a/g/n Wi-Fi) will give you plenty of ways to fill that hard drive up. Note that the NV5807 doesn’t have FireWire, so if you have a video camera that requires it, look elsewhere. The laptop Business Notebook nc8430 battery does have a (rather unremarkable) Webcam and mic for voice and video chat, and the provided driver software lets you access the feature when you move the mouse to the spot right under the camera, which can be sort of neat (and is easily disabled, in case it gets annoying).
